Significant accomplishments since 2018
Non-Discrimination Ordinance – I am proud of my role supporting and pushing forward the Non-Discrimination Ordnance passed in 2019 providing all residents of Smyrna the same rights and protections. Many people in my life who I love dearly are protected by this ordinance. Smyrna is an accepting community and I believe this ordinance reflects the values of our residents. There is no place for discrimination in Smyrna.
Tobacco-21 – To address the rapid rise of underage vaping and the long-term consequences to our middle and high school students, I championed first T-21 ordinance in the State of Georgia, raising the legal age to buy tobacco products in the City of Smyrna from 18 to 21. Studies show making it harder to buy e-cigarettes and tobacco products directly reduced underage usage. The ordinance was passed on 2019. We are ahead of our time, with the Federal Government raising the legal age across the country later in December 2019.
Protecting Our Neighborhoods – Ensuring our neighborhoods are safe and offer high quality life standards to or residents, I focus on issues that directly impact Ward 6 residents.
Short Term Rental Ordinance- I enjoy using a good vacation VRBO or Airbnb as much as anyone, but I certainly don’t want to live next a weekend rental party house. I’m proud of my work creating the short-term rental ordinance that protects our single family neighborhoods and providing property owners the ability to rent their property. While short term rentals are a valued service to many in Smyrna, residents have the right to know an ongoing rental business will not pop up next to their home.
Traffic Calming Efforts – As part of the Traffic Calming Committee, I continue working with staff to implement creative solutions making our neighborhood streets and sidewalks safer. Undoubtedly you have encountered a new speed table, signage, stop sign, cross walk or radar sign around Smyrna. Our goal is to ensure our residents feel safe walking, running or biking in their neighborhoods and all-around Smyrna.
Smyrna is a Welcoming Community:
Black History Month – Smyrna hosted our annual celebration of Black History Month in February, building on programs that started in 2019 and chaired by former Council Member Dr Lewis Wheaton. Our Black History Month recognizes and honors the contributions of African Americans and recognizes their sacrifices.
Hispanic Heritage Month – The City will host our 3rd Hispanic Heritage Celebration in October, recognizing and celebrating our diverse community, along with the histories, cultures and contributions of Smyrna residents whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, Caribbean and Central and South America.
Racial Trust Building Initiative – Based on a program from Troup County and LaGrange GA, we began a series of seminars to train leaders and residents in bridging divides between different racial and ethnic groups in the city. A goal is to bring people together of a range of backgrounds and perspectives, allowing for discussions challenging the biases that keep people from communicating with each other.
Responsiveness: For me, one of the most important aspects of being an effective Council representative is responsiveness. I work hard to address concerns, questions, and comments from constituents quickly. I am available by phone most anytime and respond to emails typically the next morning. My goal is to connect our residents with the information and staff quickly to help answer address the issue at hand.
